Eksperyment

Experiment

International Theatre Festival Maski (…) The most interesting performance was Procesy [The Trials] by Teatr Usta Usta, a piece inspired by Franz Kafka’s The Trial. From the very outset, the audience is introduced into the reality the writer created in his book. Upon leaving one’s jacket in the cloakroom, everyone receives a chain with a number which is to be hung on one’s neck – this is also the number of court case. The viewer is a defendant – they are told to sit in a designated place and ordered to remain silent. Later, it turns out that everyone of us awaits their trial. Then the structure of the world in which we find ourselves is revealed; the defence counsel openly admits that the case cannot be won, the clerk of the court drafts the indictments, while the prosecutor who inspects the crime scene and the highest adjudicating instance do not have a human form: we only hear the voice. The first to be charged is Józefka, single mother of three, whose situation is analogous to the position of Kafka’s Joseph K. The heroine also does not know why she has been arrested and for what she was brought to trial. The bureaucratic court apparatus is set in motion. Then the cases of Jeremiasz, Bronisław Przemyski and a homeless man are heard. However, as events unfold, it turns out that those who indict and inform are in turn themselves accused. Even the clerk of the court, as it transpires later, has his legs shackled. The play features the motifs of dossiers and recordings, while the effectively mounting dread is interspersed with comical elements, which introduces the element of grotesque. The costumes, with their numerous fur elements, generate constant unease. The Trials also addresses the responsibility of executioners and those who decree the punishments for carrying out the sentence on the convicted. One should also note the interesting approach to space in the performance. Everything happens in an anteroom or vestibule with imposing wooden doors, opening onto a flight stairs. The play takes places here and there, which adds realism to the world created, as there are no artificial decorations in that space.
